How to Choose Leather Jackets for Men and Women

Start with where you’ll wear it. Riders need thick hide and a close fit. Winter buyers need warmth. For everyday wear, choose by weight and look.

Cowhide

Cowhide is thick and heavy. It resists scuffs, which is why riders favor it. It feels stiff at first and softens with wear.

Lambskin

Lambskin is thin, light and soft from day one. It drapes well in fashion jackets and coats, but it marks more easily than cowhide.

Shearling and sheepskin

Shearling is sheepskin tanned with the wool left on. The leather faces out and the wool faces in, so it holds body heat. It is the material behind the B3 bomber.

Suede

Suede is the inner side of the hide, buffed to a soft, matte nap. It looks relaxed, but it stains easily and does not like rain.

Faux leather

Faux leather is a coated fabric. It costs less and uses no animal hide. It won’t develop a patina, and it usually wears out sooner than real leather.

Finding Your Size

Measure your chest at the fullest point with your arms relaxed. Compare it with the size chart [CONFIRM: on each product page]. Leather gives a little with wear, but it won’t stretch a full size. If you plan to wear a sweater underneath, leave room for it.

Caring for Leather

Wipe off dust with a dry cloth. Condition the leather a few times a year so it doesn’t dry out. Hang it on a wide hanger, away from heat and direct sun. For stains and spills, read our guide on how to clean a leather jacket.
